Chaldean Method Astrology Chart

Chaldean Decans

Astrology to the novice can seem quite confusing and overly complicated, this is because there are several different methods. While the approach to Decanates and Rulership in each of the methods remains much the same, the Decanates themselves are different. In the above chart, (from the outer, working inward) for each sign an element is assigned. If we look at Aries we can see it has a fire sign, it is assigned the numbers 1,2 and 3 because Aries is the first sign and the Horoscope begins here. Aries is Ruled by Mars and the three Decanates are Mars, the Sun and Venus. If we now move to Taurus, the second astrological sign we see that Taurus is assigned an Earth symbol, numbers 4, 5, and 6 and has Mercury, the Moon and Saturn assigned as Decanates. In the Chaldean Method, the Rulers of the Decanates follow the order of the Chaldean Planetary Order which were derived from the geo-centric speeds of the Planets, they are: Saturn - Jupiter - Mars - Sun - Venus - Mercury – Moon. This order is followed from the first Decanate to the thirty sixth and final Decanate in Pisces.

Modern Method Astrology Chart

Modern Method

Where the Chaldean Method uses only the planets which were known at the time of inception, the Modern Method uses all of the planets known today and so we can immediately see a difference in the above chart: Scorpio is now ruled by Pluto, Aquarius by Uranus and Pisces by Neptune and further that the Decanates have changed. There is however another difference, the Decanates are now drawn from the elements that the signs are assigned rather than the sequence of planets in the former chart. Aries now has the Decanates Mars, the Sun and Jupiter: this comes from the Planetary Rulers of the next two Fire signs of the Zodiac. Aries is Ruled by Mars and so the first Decanate is Mars, the next Fire Sign is Leo which is Ruled by the Sun, so the next Decanate is the Sun the final Fire Sign is Sagittarius which is Ruled by Jupiter, which is the third Decanate of Aries.

Traditional Method

The Traditional Method is the method most commonly used and is better known in astrology circles as "Decans according to triplicity". This method is similar to the Modern Method in that it the Decanates are taken from the Rulers of the signs of the same element: The Decan Rulers of Aries therefore are the rulers of Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius (Mars, the Sun, and Jupiter); the Decan rulers of Taurus are the rulers of Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn (thus Venus, Mercury, and Saturn). While Astrologers using this method might use only the planets known in antiquity, it is also commonplace for the planets recognised today to be used and this is reflected in the above chart, which shows both.
