In astrology, the planets represent different parts of our experience, from identity and emotions to communication, relationships and change. Their positions in the zodiac are one of the starting points for interpreting a birth chart.
This page is an introductory guide to what planetary positions mean. It does not show live planetary coordinates.
Astrologers use the Sun, Moon and planets as symbols for different qualities and themes:
These are traditional astrological associations used for reflection and interpretation, not scientifically established causes of personality or events.
A planet’s zodiac sign describes how its symbolism may be expressed, while its house points to an area of life. Aspects describe the angular relationships between planets and add another layer of interpretation.
The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars move through the zodiac relatively quickly. Jupiter and Saturn take longer, while Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move much more slowly. Astrologers often connect those different cycles with shorter-term experiences and longer-term themes.
Traditionally, each zodiac sign also has a planetary ruler. For example, Mars rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, and Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. Planetary rulership is one of several techniques used to interpret a chart.
